Abstract †

In the last August, "Summer School for (Junior) High School Girls" was held in the National Women's Education Center (NWEC). In this event, I gave a lecture in "Science Adventure" experiment/practice class. We drew some graphics of curves and surfaces using 3D-XplorMath. I would like to report my experience in the Summer School.

I will introduce Sage, free and open source math software. The project is so ambitious that it becames a viable alternative to commercial math software like Mathematica, Maple and Matlab.

From August 19th to 27th, 2010, we participated the International Congress of Mathematicians 2010, Hyderabad, India. We introduced KNOPPIX/Math Project at the exhibition booth: "mathsoftware.org". We suceeded to distribute 1000 pieces of KNOPPIX/Math DVDs at this booth. I will introduce the new KNOPPIX/Math and the latest information of India.

By "freely", we mean "with the help of free software". The "Computer Aided Translation" category of software is here to make the translation process easier. Professional translators use proprietary software in the 40 to a few hundred thousands yen for such software licenses. But even here free software has made it's apparition, in the form of OmegaT among others. OmegaT is based on Java so it runs everywhere. It is easy to understand so everybody can use it. It is very fast so it does not feel awkward to translate in such an environment. Today, we'll discuss the concept of "translation memory" before showing how OmegaT works, with such ubiquitous formats as ODT etc.

STACK, System for Teaching and Assessment using a Computer algebra Kernel, is a computer aided assessment system for mathematics which makes use of the computer algebra system Maxima to generate random questions, establish the properties of answers and to provide sophisticated mathematical feedback. STACK is used as a subsystem of Moodle and create mathematics related questions as a new question type. In this talk, STACK is introduced with demonstrations.

The T2V technology is to convert text to animation automatically using computer graphics, synthesized voices and various animation techniques. We provide free software named 'T2V Player' which enables to make your own animation simply typing in your script on a PC. You can also obtain movie file of your animation and upload it to the movie sharing services making it open to the public. Moreover, existing text-based information such as web sites can be converted to animation with no effort by using T2V technology. I will introduce its big potential owing to the simple concept of T2V showing many demos actually working on my PC.
